Betania Santos is a doctoral candidate in the Departments of Sociology and Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research examines the communities of care that support youth mental health, with a particular focus on the politics of care affecting youth of color in Los Angeles. Drawing on insights from diverse care networks—including grassroots community organizers, mental health providers in private medical institutions, nonprofit organizations, and public school settings—her work explores the intersection of care, mental health, and social justice. Through fostering spaces of shared lived experiences and relational care, Betania aspires to contribute to the creation of just and flourishing futures for students and communities of color.
